MARSOP3

Operational activities for MARS actions – Period 3

Duration 2008 - 2013
CustomerJoint Research Centre (DG JRC) / Alterra (Netherlands)
AbstractMARSOP-3 project is an integral part of the activity referred as the MARS Crop Yield Forecasting System (MCYFS) carried out by AGRI4CAST and FOODSEC actions within the Institute for the Protection and the Security of the Citizen (DG JRC Ispra, Italy).

The activities in the current MARS Crop Yield Forecasting System include:
  • Management of a meteorological database
  • Management of an agro-meteorological model and DB
  • Management of low resolution satellite information and DB
  • Statistical analyses of data produced and crop yield forecasting at European level
  • Publishing of bulletins containing analysis, forecasts and thematic maps on crop yield expectations

Defined operational activities in support of the MCYFS have been outsourced in 2000 with contracts called MARSOP and MARSOP-2. The current MARSOP 3 project can be considered as a prolongation and extension of these activities.

The MARSOP3 Project focuses on the provision of operational near-real time products to the JRC-AGRI4CAST and JRC-FOOD-SEC for monitoring of agricultural production and yield in Europe and the World.

The MARSOP-3 Consortium is formed by five partners from four EU countries: Alterra (NL) – project leader, VITO (BE), Meteo Consult (NL), GISAT (CZ) and The University of Reading (UK).

Gisat has joined the MARSOP-3 team as the first partner of new EU Member States. Within the operational running and maintenance of CGMS / CGFS for Europe and Asia GISAT is performing recalibration of the crop growth model. For the execution of the Global Water Satisfaction Index model with ECMWF data GISAT is performing analysis of Land Cover (Glob Cover) products and existing national crop information and evaluation of suitable data sets for the purpose. Under the MARS-viewers part of MARSOP3, a GIS interface is being programmed for performing predefined analytical tasks and for display and mapping purposes.
